'P'/'J' type basses

Below is a selection of bass guitars, click on an image for more photos.....

A '64 style J type bass, finished in olympic white nitro and distressed to approx. 7 out of 10.

The curved join fingerboard features clay dots and is a joy to play, slim and fast with a lovely broken in feel.

The full celluloid 4 ply tortoise shell guard is handmade and vintage correct in shape with slight 'shrinkage' and the correct 30 degree bevelled edge.

Voodoo JB60 greys are fitted and sound great, the usual CTS pots and switchcraft jack are also present.

An awesome looking and sounding bass.....

This is a cool one...fretless 'J' type bass with epoxy coated fingerboard. The body has a 'stripped' natural look, it's finished in shellac polish, as is the neck, waxed and buffed to a nice satin finish, feels incredible in the hands.
The pickups are Bartolini's, in conjunction with the epoxy coated fingerboard, they give the bass a really nice growl that most fretless players can only dream about.
The handmade pickguard is 4 ply celluloid, has the vintage correct bevel and features the indentations left by the finger rest and pickup cover just like you see on real vintage guards!
The bridge is a Badass ll, the tuners are genuine vintage Klusons, the control plate is a nasty brass thing left over from the '80's.....totally cool looking now!

As fretless basses go, they don't come a lot better than this!

Don't seem to get a lot of call for this type of bass, yep...the good ole 'P' type, this particular bass features a genuine pre-CBS pickguard. The body is alder, finished in 3 tone sunburst (7/10 distressing), the neck is rosewood and maple with clay dots, made to the old spec. with a 43mm wide nut!

The pickup is a Voodoo PB60, pots are CTS and the jack is a Switchcraft. The metal undershield is present beneath the guard and can be seen protruding where the guard has shrunk with age.

A lovely sounding old school 'thump' is easily achievable on this beauty, cool as they come!

Like the bass below, this one also features some real vintage parts in it's construction. It is based on a 1966 'dots and binding' instrument and has real mid-'60's 'paddle' tuners, control plate, knobs and pots (dated 6641) and a genuine 1966 neckplate and screws.
The body is lightweight alder, the lightly flamed neck is reinforced with carbon fibre rods and has a curved join rosewood fingerboard with pearloid dots. The pickups are early '80's Fenders, now becoming vintage in their own right, they sound and look the part completely. I decided to leave off the pickguard to give the instrument a more stripped, working man look about it...plus I'm a Jaco fan.....!

An absolutely ripping bass, plays like a dream, rings like a piano, sounds like a good 'J' should...awesome.

Here's the coolest 'J' type bass you'll ever see. I built this for myself using real vintage parts I collected over a 4 year period.
The tuners are 1963, headstock strap button 1961, tortoise shell guard is early 1964, the bridge is 1964, the control plate and knobs are 1963, the pots are 1962 (6234), the neckplate is early 1963. The pickup covers were from an early '80's Tokai J, really nicely worn.
The only repro stuff on the bass (other than body and neck) is the thumbrest, strap buttons and pickups (Voodoo JB60's)
The neck is reinforced with carbon fibre rods and has a curved join Brazilian rosewood fingerboard with clay dots. The body is lightweight alder, both body and neck are finished in paper thin nitro-cellulose...awesome and totally cool bass.....
Stack knob J type bass, lightweight swamp ash body finished in nitro cellulose blonde, Brazilian rosewood slab fingerboard with clay dots.

4 ply celluloid tortiose shell guard, vintage style hardware throughout...even got the holes for the metal covers and string mutes!

The bass has been left in 10 out of 10 condition, as it would have left the shop in 1960!

It has an awesome tight punchy sound and is very versatile with the stack knob arrangement.

Slab board J type bass, finished in fiesta red (with matching headstock) and distressed to about 4 out of 10.

Rosewood board with clay dots, hand made aged green guard, earthing strip and mutes holes...it's all there!

The bass plays and sounds amazing, the neck has an incredible played in feel that makes you not want to put it down.....awesome instrument, I'm sad to see it go...

This is an ultra cool mid '50's style P type bass. Alder body and one piece maple neck. The body is finished in a distressed two tone sunburst and looks amazing, the neck is similarly distressed and has the beautiful played in feel of a vintage bass.

The pickup is a Seymour Duncan antiquity, looks and sounds the great.

This was the first time I'd built a '50's style P type, I am over the moon with the result, it took a fair bit of research and experimentation but the end result was well worth the effort! (click here to see the bass under construction)

'61 J type bass finished in distressed 3 tone sunburst. Plenty of wear on this one!

Hand made 4 ply celluloid guard, clay dots, Brazilian rosewood slab board, stack knobs, earthing strip and mute holes add up to one very convincing looking bass

It plays like a dream and has that classic J honk...awesome!

Something a little different...this is a fretless P type with J type pickup routs...a 'Jazzcision' perhaps.....?

I built this for myself, it features an epoxy coated rosewood fingerboard (not an option I currently offer before anyones asks), alder body finished in teal green, ceramic pickups, Badass nickel plated bridge, dual concentric pots (like a stack knob J bass) and chrome control plate.

This bass really sings and has that 'growl' that every fretless player dreams of, totally cool bass...

1960 J type 'stack knob' bass, finished in blonde over swamp ash and distressed to about 4/5 out of 10.

The neck features a Brazilian rosewood fingerboard with clay dots with the correct early '60's 12th fret dot spacing. The pickguard is full celluloid, 4 ply tortoise shell, hand made and hand aged. Pickup wise, Voodoo JB60's are fitted.

Due to the dense swamp ash body, the bass has a very sustained, naturally compressed sound...exactly what I was after.....Awesome bass!

Replica of a 1964 J type bass, complete with curved join Brazilian rosewood fingerboard and clay dots. The bass is finished in a stunning burgundy mist and is distressed to about 5 out of 10.

Burgundy mist is a very rare custom colour, only a handful of the originals left the factory sporting this particular colour, I think it's a real 'love it or hate it' colour, I'm quite a fan of it!

The mint green guard is hand made and hand aged, and looks great against the burgundy mist.

You might have noticed the hole in the control plate, this is a real 1965 plate that someone once drilled a hole in...!

Here's a cool one, a 1966 jazz bass project I've recently completed. The neck is actually from a real '66 jazz bass, the dots and binding type, I bought it from eBay ages ago but have only just got around to doing anything with it. The lacquer, frets and decal are all original on this neck.

I set about finding original '66 parts to go with it, other than the bridge saddles, pickups, pickguard and a few other bits and pieces, all the other parts are from '66 or nearabouts.

The body is not original, I made that to '66 specs and sprayed it nitro sunburst, the mid-'60's 'target burst' type as opposed to the earlier more transparent sunburst seen up until mid '64

It looks and sounds absolutely awesome.....

Early '60's style J type bass finished in foam green nitro, this has been lightly distressed to about 9 out of 10.

The fingerboard is a nice slab of Brazilian rosewood with clay dots.

The bass has an incredibly punchy sound and plays like a dream.

Completely hand made, authentic down to the mute holes and earthing strip...it doesn't get more realistic than this...

Here's a '62 style 'J' type bass, what makes this one a little different from the run of the mill replicas is that I made both body and neck to exacting detail, the body is alder with all the correct appointments for the era (router hump, pin router holes, etc.), the neck is maple with a Brazilian rosewood slab fingerboard with clay dots, the hand made and hand aged pickguard was cut from a full nitro-celluloid tortoise shell, 4 ply sheet, the most authentic tortoise shell I have seen to date.

The bass rings like a piano, awesome looking and sounding.

Custom 'Bluburst' J type bass, swamp ash body with maple neck and ebony fingerboard, abalone dots.

Fitted with passive Bartolini 'P/J' pickup set, Badass bridge and black pearl pickguard.

Finished in '10 out of 10' nitro-cellulose.

This one is about '10 years later' than the one below. Heavily distressed body, fretless fingerboard with clay dots.

This is about a '2 out of 10'

Similar to bass below but a little less wear and tear. Rosewood fingerboard with clay dots.
